survey & siting

In spite of driving rain we managed to do an initial site survey yesterday, which will help us decide where to place the house. Measuring the plot using a level, tripod and survey stick, we were able to draw up the topography and try out the house in various positions, reassessing the resulting heights, orientations and aspects.

There are in fact already three structures on the plot: MacArthur’s original house (now dilapidated), a funky blue trailer he acquired at some point, and a larger refurbished trailer the studio has given him to live in until the house is completed. We have to leave enough space for the studio’s trailer to be pulled out once MacArthur’s moved into the new house – but also need to work around the original cinder block structure…. or do we? Possible demolition is on the agenda for our discussion with Mr Badanes on Saturday!

power!

Today we installed an electricity pole on site to use during construction, and then hook up to the house once it’s completed. With a small audience of curious children, and the help of our client MacArthur, we were done in no time. Danny didn’t hesitate to jump right onto the auger; Will used his substantial muscle to ram the grounding rod; Penny drove her first tractor; and Clem managed (with expert guidance from Johnny P.) to reverse it back up onto the trailer.

getting ready

time is flying and it’s already spring break! we’ve spent the last couple of weeks drawing details for the exterior cladding – but are still not completely settled on what we want to go for…so, hoping that we’ll return with clear heads, fresh eyes and able to make a bold decision!, we’re going to set that aside for now, and start putting together the construction drawings to take on site in april. it’s time to tackle electricity, plumbing and get our heads around exactly in what order everything goes up!

can corner boards be contemporary?

we’re not sure…but are looking around town for the answer…
